Background of the study

Short Message Service (SMS) has revolutionized communication by promoting brevity and efficiency, leading to unique syntactic patterns in texting among Nigerians. This study evaluates the syntax of Nigerian texting, focusing on how users adapt traditional grammatical rules to suit the constraints and informality of SMS communication. Nigerian SMS texts often exhibit abbreviated structures, unconventional punctuation, and creative word order, which reflect the influence of local languages and digital communication trends (Ogun, 2023). These syntactic adaptations serve not only to convey messages quickly but also to encode social and cultural nuances that are unique to the Nigerian context. By analyzing a corpus of SMS messages collected from diverse demographic groups, the research examines how syntax is transformed in this medium, and how these changes affect clarity, meaning, and user engagement (Eze, 2024). The study situates these syntactic patterns within the broader discourse on language evolution in digital communication, contributing to both theoretical discussions and practical applications in language teaching and technology design (Balogun, 2025).

Statement of the problem

Despite the prevalence of SMS communication in Nigeria, there is a paucity of research on the syntactic patterns that characterize Nigerian texting. Traditional grammatical norms are often modified or abandoned in favor of more efficient, context-driven structures, which can lead to misunderstandings or misinterpretations (Ogun, 2023). The lack of a systematic analysis of SMS syntax hinders the development of effective communication strategies and educational programs that address these digital trends. This study aims to fill this gap by evaluating the unique syntactic structures in Nigerian texting, thereby providing insights into how language adapts to technological constraints and social practices (Eze, 2024).

Objectives of the study:

1. To document the syntactic features prevalent in Nigerian SMS messages.

2. To analyze the impact of these features on message clarity and communication.

3. To propose recommendations for improving syntax in digital communication.

Research questions:

1. What are the dominant syntactic patterns in Nigerian SMS texting?

2. How do these patterns influence the clarity of communication?

3. What strategies can enhance syntactic effectiveness in SMS messages?

Significance of the study

This study is significant as it evaluates the syntax of Nigerian texting, offering insights into how digital constraints shape language use. The findings will be valuable for linguists, educators, and technology developers aiming to bridge the gap between traditional grammar and contemporary communication practices, ultimately fostering clearer digital communication (Balogun, 2025).

Scope and limitations of the study:

The study focuses exclusively on syntactic patterns in Nigerian SMS texting. It does not extend to other digital communication forms or languages.

Definitions of terms:

1. Syntax: The set of rules that govern the structure of sentences.

2. Short Message Service (SMS): A text messaging service component of most telephone, internet, and mobile device systems.

3. Texting: Informal written communication via digital devices.
